Masterful and Sustainable. Glenroy Community Hub is a Winner.

Glenroy Community Hub was acknowledged as Best Sustainable Project, along with Excellence is Construction, at the 2022 Master Builders Awards in Victoria.

Team behind the Hub – DesignInc, Building Engineering, WSP Australia, TTW Engineers and Merri-bek City Council

As the first community building in Australia built to Passive House and Living Building Challenge standards, the Hub is a compelling demonstration of the City of Merri‑bek’s commitment to world-leading, sustainable design.

DesignInc collaborated with Head Contractors, Building Engineering, who received the Master Builder awards at a ceremony held in August 2022.

DesignInc, Building Engineering and consultant the team, including WSP, TTW and Detail Green, worked collaboratively to deliver on this high sustainability standard, including integrated design workshops for crucial construction junctions that would deliver thermal bridge-free design and airtightness – both are critical features of Passive House.

Congratulations to everyone involved in delivering an amazing sustainable outcome.

As Head Contractor, Building Engineering established a methodology to ensure the project achieved the post-construction air tightness test of 0.6 air changes per hour (@50 pascals). The project’s sustainability credentials are further supported in seeking Zero Energy, Living Building Challenge Petal certification and the integration of the existing, heritage, primary school building on site. The project’s sustainability was further reinforced by saving and renovating an existing heritage building designed as a continuous part of the library space. Heritage bricks from junction walls were saved and reinstated once adjoining structures were complete.
