Monash University Building 53 Insect Laboratory

Monash University expands World Mosquito Program Research Facility. The World Mosquito Program (WMP) is a not-for-profit initiative with an ongoing commitment to combat mosquito-borne diseases. The laboratory expansion aims to bolster research in this critical field.

This project refurbishes the entire ground floor of Building 53 on the Monash Clayton campus with a new laboratory, quarantine-controlled environment, PC2 and PC3 research labs and office spaces to supplement the WMP’s level 1 facilities designed by DesignInc in 2011.

Our scope expands the existing quarantine insectary space and creates appropriate ancillary areas, meeting rooms, and interactive people-focused spaces that foster innovation and invite collaboration.

We used transparency as a core design element, placing science on display to make teaching, learning and research highly visible, particularly at the building edge adjacent to Innovation Walk and College Walk. A new entry and ground floor upgrade create a sense of arrival and overall experience appropriate for a world-leading organisation.

In developing cutting-edge infrastructure that fosters collaboration and transparency, DesignInc is proud to support WMP’s research into innovative disease prevention strategies that have the potential to save lives worldwide.

Pioneered by Australian researchers, WMP is renowned for its innovative approach to disease prevention by leveraging Wolbachia bacterium to reduce the ability of mosquitoes to transmit viruses.

In developing cutting-edge infrastructure, fostering collaboration, and promoting transparency, DesignInc is proud to support WMP’s research into innovative disease prevention strategies that have the potential to save lives worldwide.

The expansion of the World Mosquito Program’s research facilities at Monash University is a significant step forward in their quest to protect communities globally from the threat of mosquito-borne diseases.
