Banksia Station Upgrade

Upgrading Banksia Station to be accessible and welcoming presented some unusual challenges—as well as existing buildings having high heritage values, the main pedestrian access was via an underpass that regularly flooded. Rather than rerouting access by building an expensive and bulky overpass, our team proposed an elegant alternative whereby tanks and a pump were installed beneath the underpass, mitigating the flooding issue.
Our multi-disciplinary team worked together to provide integrated urban design, architecture and landscape design services for the upgrade which includes three new lifts, stairs, ramps, platform canopies, upgraded ambulant and family bathrooms, CCTV, lighting and wayfinding. Multi-modal transport is facilitated through better connection to the adjacent commuter carpark, new kiss and ride facilities, upgrades to the nearby bus shelter and increased bicycle parking. Public domain areas are improved through landscaping and feature paving along footpaths.

The architectural language takes cues from the scale, materiality and colour tones of the existing heritage station and the surrounding Federation-era houses, while remaining clearly identifiable as being new. Painted steel, brickwork, exposed connections, screens and balustrades, reinforcing existing materials and finishes that are gritty, durable, robust, sustainable, maintainable, safe, flexible and cost effective.

Banksia Station received a ‘Leading Infrastructure Sustainability Council Design’ rating of 91/100, which is an outstanding achievement and reflects the deep consideration and integration of sustainability initiatives applied during all stages of design and construction.
