50 James Street

50 James Street is a revitalisation of a building originally designed by our office in 1995. The refurbishment aimed to update the existing—originally a ground-floor retail space with first-floor commercial offices—to align with the evolving aesthetic of James Street’s high-end retail and commercial precinct.
Rather than undertaking extensive structural modifications, DesignInc introduced a custom-designed screen that redefined the building’s frontage, creating a fresh architectural identity while enhancing solar protection for first-floor office tenants.
The ground-floor retail spaces were upgraded with new external cladding, including tiles and textured render, complemented by steel-framed pop-out windows with frameless glass. These windows not only maximise natural light and provide dynamic display opportunities for retailers but are also framed with landscaping to soften the building’s edge. The result is a contemporary refurbishment that ensures the building remains relevant and functional for the foreseeable future, seamlessly integrating with the evolving streetscape of James Street.
