Designing for Clarity, Comfort and Connection at Gold Coast Airport

DesignInc has delivered a major refresh to the departures lounge and retail experience at Gold Coast Airport, creating a more intuitive, accessible and vibrant passenger environment that reflects the warmth of the region.
The project reimagines the domestic terminal’s departures area with an experience-led retail masterplan, expanded circulation space, and a strong focus on visibility and flow. Guided by the principles of Clarity, Visibility and Legibility, DesignInc’s integrated architecture and interiors team redefined key touchpoints—wayfinding, security, gate access and retail—within a live terminal environment.
‘Airports are complex environments and it’s our role as architects and designers to make people’s journeys to and through airports as simple, stress-free as possible,’ says Claire Kirlew, Principal Aviation at DesignInc. ‘Working with a progressive client in Gold Coast Airport meant our teams were able to really interrogate the brief and ultimately create an outcome which will ensure the longevity, sustainability and aesthetic of the airport of one of Australia’s prime holiday destinations.’
New and reconfigured retail and food and beverage areas improve convenience and commercial outcomes, while a bright northern concourse and new kiosk tenancies extend the ‘Hinterland to Coast’ interiors strategy. Cohesive finishes, recycled materials, and carbon-neutral products reinforce the airport’s Net Zero ambitions.
Smart spatial planning was central to the upgrade—improving sightlines, rethinking seating and incorporating an inclusive Changing Places facility. The design also delivers a more open interior environment with a new polycarbonate smoke baffle, increased daylight and integrated amenities.
‘The transformation of our domestic terminal has truly elevated the Gold Coast Airport experience,’ says Marion Charlton, Chief Operating Officer, Gold Coast Airport. ‘’From improved wayfinding to a wider concourse and smart repositioning of gate numbers, every design choice has contributed to smoother passenger flow and a more seamless journey.
‘Creating an airport experience that’s accessible to everyone is a key priority for us. The inclusion of a Changing Places facility ensures all travellers feel welcome and supported.
‘This project is not just about meeting the needs of today’s travellers – it’s about building a future ready airport. By incorporating eco-friendly materials and repurposed design elements, these upgrades align with our Net Zero goals and reflect our broader commitment to sustainability and responsible long-term growth.’
With the Brisbane 2032 Olympics on the horizon, this upgrade represents a significant step forward for Gold Coast Airport, and a benchmark for design-driven terminal enhancements.
