Mount Barker District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Emergency Department

The Mount Barker District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, managed by the Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN), is a vital peri-urban healthcare hub providing 24-hour emergency care. Serving one of South Australia’s fastest-growing regions, the hospital plays an essential role in easing pressure on Adelaide’s metropolitan facilities.

With population growth driving a sharp rise in emergency presentations, DesignInc Adelaide, in collaboration with health planning specialists Destravis Group, partnered with BHFLHN to deliver a new emergency department.

Enhancing capacity and wellbeing through thoughtful design

The expansion more than doubles capacity, now offering 17 treatment areas — including two resuscitation bays, two paediatric bays, 13 patient bays, and a negative pressure room — ensuring the hospital can continue delivering timely, essential care. Grounded in biophilic design, the interiors draw inspiration from the Adelaide Hills stringybark forests. Calming visuals in waiting and treatment areas create a supportive, restorative environment for both patients and staff in the fast-paced ED setting.
