University of Sydney, Conservatorium of Music—Parramatta

The University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s new Parramatta education facilities represent a pivotal step in reshaping music education and cultural engagement in Western Sydney. Crafted like a finely tuned instrument which subtly reflects its purpose, this 1,700sqm retrofitted commercial building is set to become a pathway for the next generation of Australian composers, producers, performers and sound designers.

Opening in Semester 2, 2026, this redevelopment delivers industry-grade studios, rehearsal spaces and a professionally equipped 60-seat auditorium. It is designed to support the digital components of the Bachelor of Music and provide a gateway to professional practice for emerging artists.

The facility offers students authentic, hands-on training in immersive audio, live performance and interdisciplinary collaboration. With a Dolby Atmos-certified teaching room, modular production suites and flexible teaching bays, the facility mirrors professional environments and prepares students for careers in composition, sound design, production and performance.

In Concert with Students, Industry and Community

The Parramatta education facility is not just a learning space but is a cultural and educational asset. It supports the University’s ‘Sydney in 2032’ strategy by embedding a high-quality Conservatorium presence in Western Sydney, strengthening industry connections and creating new pathways for diverse student cohorts.

Students will benefit from a number of key upgrades, including:

The space also opens its doors to the community, with a flexible booking strategy and street-level activation for performances, workshops and cultural partnerships. It is configured to support First Nations programming and future design-from-Country collaborations, ensuring cultural inclusion is central to its identity.

Future-Facing Design and Sustainability

Every element of the Parramatta education facility has been thoughtfully designed to balance agility, sustainability and technical excellence. The facility features modular infrastructure that supports evolving pedagogies and emerging technologies, allowing spaces to adapt as teaching methods and industry standards shift. Layered acoustic isolation and floating floor systems ensure professional-grade sound environments across studios and performance areas, while centralised AV and plant systems streamline servicing and enable future upgrades with minimal disruption.

Sustainability is embedded throughout the design, with the project targeting a 4 Star Green Star equivalent through adaptive reuse of the existing building fabric, recycled acoustic panels and benchtops, natural fibre carpets and selective reuse of furniture. These measures reflect a commitment to long-term environmental responsibility and operational flexibility, ensuring the space remains future-ready and resilient.
