Niwili White Forrest
Effective community engagement comes down to relationships and being an advocate for community. Through building trust, creating a space where people feel comfortable sharing, then respectfully handling information shared. It’s also about understanding the diversity in cultures across different communities and working alongside Elders, Knowledge Holders and Community to design together. When it’s done properly, codesign strengthens architecture and leads to better outcomes for both the client and the community.
Niwili is a Ngangikurungurr artist and designer with over eight years’ experience across different sectors including education, health, community and residential buildings. Niwili has completed a Masters of Architecture specialising in Social Agency and spent his university years working in Indigenous Education as a tutor and mentor. Niwili’s architectural projects include cultural centres, concept and schematic design for multiple high schools, and masterplanning as well as schematic design for health and education campuses and precincts in both urban and more remote settings. He has successfully led teams of designers, and collaborated with other technical disciplines, to deliver these sensitive and complex projects.
