Simon Best
Enduring Architecture must combine a vast array of aspects into a single, wholistic design. Each project balances these uniquely—celebrating some, humbling others. The art lies in identifying and developing this mix, with awareness ahead of trends or accepted values. As society and environment change, so must our learning.
Simon believes in a wholistic design approach, inspired by successful product design, industrial design, sustainability, engineering refinement and learning from the trades, influencing the entire delivery of a project. He has also been involved in industry forums through his career, including positions on the RAIA SA Chapter Council, Architects Board (APBSA) and the Property Council. He is on a standing panel for the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, accrediting architectural courses across Australia and New Zealand.
His experience and focus is in Defence, Education, Community and Sport and Recreation, both in single-project and master plan design. He has been practicing since 1993, in which time he has had experience at all scales of construction and practice size, and with various design and construction procurement methods, in private, public and institutional project types.
Across a career of over 30 years, through the organisations he has been involved with, Simon has always sought to lead and develop company and personal standards in design, company strategy, mentorship, refinement of work practices and a supportive studio-based culture.
