Knox is one of Australia’s largest shopping malls, situated in one of the fastest expanding growth corridors in Melbourne. Its sheer size and variety of shops has made it a destination retail centre, attracting customers from other parts of greater Melbourne.

DesignInc was commissioned to upgrade the existing centre as well as provide a retail overview of the new extension. The overall design philosophy was to create a complete leisure and entertainment environment incorporating indoor and outdoor spaces for retail, dining and entertainment.

The existing centre was substantially increased in size, and a new outdoor pedestrian mall, Knox Ozone created to provide a more youth focused retail and dining environment.

Due to the size of the centre, various precincts were created, each with its own look and feel, and each having a different retail focus. Knox is situated at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, a significant natural reserve, so a decision was made early in the design process to emphasise the links with nature. There is therefore extensive use of natural Australian timbers, abundant natural light and larges spatial volumes.
