This $75m project was completed in May 2000 ready for the Olympic Games and included four underground stations comprising:
Green Square: $14m Peak hour loading over 1 hour is 3,800 passengers
Mascot: $15m Peak hour loading over 1 hour is 3,800 passengers
Domestic Terminal: $18m Peak hour loading over 1 hour is 2,000 passengers
International Terminal: $20m Peak hour loading over 1 hour is 2,000 passengers
DesignInc’s involvement was the provision of Architectural and Interior Design, Documentation and Construction Services of the 4 new underground stations under a D & C Contract. It also included the engagement and management of the signage and cost control consultants.
The development is Australia’s largest rail infrastructure project since the Sydney City Circle line. It is 20 metres below ground, with 10km of underground track, and provides a critical rail link to the airports.
Each station has 3 underground levels - a retail level, a concourse level and the platform level. All stations are serviced by lifts, escalators and stairs with materials elected for their durability, high presentation quality and ability to incorporate signage and the Airport Link corporate identity.
To attract commuters five storey’s below ground we have attempted to create stations that are above ground in feeling. To achieve this we have effectively “turned the world upside down”. In the Airport Link Stations the traveller moves through a hierarchy of experiences which culminate with the stations’ heart at the centre of the station platforms as the most celebrated, where the walls are a warm golden ‘sandstone’ colour with the floor and ceiling awash with light creating a sense of comfort, safety and destination.
This approach coupled with the use of ‘Australian Outback’ colours of sandstone, blue gum green and white clouds; has helped create a uniquely Australian look at Sydney’s major gateway.
