The Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne has been named Australia’s best public building at the fourth annual Property Council of Australia Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.
The award was achieved in competition against the Melbourne Convention Centre, District Court of Western Australia and other high profile contenders.
Property Council of Australia CEO Peter Verwer told a gala awards dinner at Star City in Sydney that a public private partnership had delivered a hospital of world standing.
“The Royal Women’s Health Partnership has been recognised on a global scale,” Mr Verwer said.
“It provides whole of life benefits and design efficiencies that will continue to service the building.”
Mr Verwer said the hospital provided mothers and babies with world-class facilities in comfortable, family-friendly surrounds.
“This hospital was created after consultations with 1,000 women and it is a place that is sensitive and respectful to the needs of patients but also with the capacity for relaxed family interaction and healing,” he said.
“They have created a dedicated women’s facility that maintains its own identity without jarring the context of the surrounding buildings.”
Mr Michael Kerr, Director of Rider Levett Bucknall Melbourne said the success of the Royal Women’s Hospital highlighted the best of what Government can do in combining its expertise with that of the private sector.
“The dedication, teamwork and flexibility shown by all partners has seen this project delivered on time and on budget and providing an exceptional outcome for the women and newborn babies of Victoria,” Mr Kerr said.
The hospital was designed in partnership with Woodhead International as DWI.
